Auroville Corruption Scandal: Unearthing a Complex Web of Deceit

In the year 2019, our persistent crusade against corruption in the Auroville community prompted Dr. Karan Singh, the former chairman of the Auroville Foundation, to convene an enquiry committee. Tasked with scrutinizing allegations of impropriety, this committee diligently investigated the matter and subsequently produced a report of utmost significance. This report not only highlighted the gravity of the situation but also called for the intervention of central investigative agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Notably, this crucial document was forwarded to the Ministry of Education in September 2019.

However, what followed was a disheartening display of apathy within the Ministry of Education. Their apparent negligence in handling the report set the stage for a series of disturbing events, including attempts at concealing evidence, financial irregularities, and suspicious liaisons with state and central government offices. It is worth noting that the Under Secretary of Auroville found himself suspended due to his alleged involvement, further reinforcing the damning claims made in the enquiry committee's report.

Simultaneously, a spate of alarming incidents has come to light, ranging from international drug smuggling via postal channels to cases of idol smuggling in Auroville. These events have only exacerbated the already burgeoning backlog of unsolved criminal cases within the enclave. The tireless efforts of well-intentioned Aurovilians, who have provided us with invaluable updates, information, and documents, have been instrumental in advancing our quest for justice and transparency.

The construction of the Crown Road served as a poignant backdrop to many of Auroville's activities, bringing them under the global spotlight and strengthening our resolve. Meanwhile, a power struggle between two factions within Auroville has unfolded, leaving the majority of Aurovilians as either silent observers or entirely unaware of the clandestine machinations occurring behind closed doors. Our relentless pursuit of truth led us to engage with various government offices and file multiple Right to Information (RTI) requests. Subsequently, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) bearing WP 5961/2020 was lodged with the Madras High Court.

In scrutinizing the evidence compiled by the 2019 Enquiry Committee and the subsequent developments, a troubling pattern begins to emerge. The evidence and individuals cited herein are emblematic of a broader network within Auroville, one that was ostensibly public but shrouded in secrecy. The aftermath of these revelations witnessed a flurry of cover-ups, culminating in the clandestine submission of a report titled "Light for All" to the Ministry, an act that lacked the approval of Auroville's Governing Board and Resident Assembly.
